CALONCHO is an artist from the North state of Sonora and an adoptive son of Guadalajara where he has been living for most of his life and where his first musical incursions have generated reactions that have marked his young career. The EP “Fruta” was among the most-sold albums on iTunes in Mexico for 5 consecutive months, and the tracks “Palmar” and “Chupetazos” remained among the 50 most-virally-searched songs on Spotify. / Oscar Castro, conocido desde niño como CALONCHO, recibió además de numerosas reseñas halagadoras con su primer EP, 2 premios de sus 4 nominaciones a los Indi-O Music Awards (IMAS) que reconocen a lo mejor de la música Independiente en México, llevándose los premios de “Mejor Disco POP” y “Mejor Disco Solista”. “Fruta” was released in September 2013. “It sounds like everything I have been listening to and filtered during my upbringing, covering from Mexican folk songs, the beach, a little bit of the forest and the city, to learning situations, existence, longing and love of life,” states CALONCHO, an artist who grew up surrounded by music. Even though initially a drum set was his first instrument of choice, he later showed a preference for the guitar which was the instrument of the first songs he wrote. “My dad would write songs for us as if making ‘hard-boiled eggs’, and I am sure that that was my poetical inspiration for creating situations, combined with my mother’s impeccable vocabulary and verbal abilities.” / “Fruta” fue lanzado en septiembre del 2013 y “suena a todo lo que he escuchado y filtrado desde mi origen, a través del folk nacional, la playa, un poco de bosque y ciudad, situaciones de aprendizaje, existencia, nostalgia y amor por la vida” señala CALONCHO, un artista que creció rodeado de música y aunque en un principio fue la batería su primer instrumento de elección, mas tarde se inclinó por la guitarra, con la cual comenzó sus primeras composiciones. “Mi papá nos hacía canciones como ‘huevos cocidos’ y seguramente de ahí saqué la onda lírica de crear situaciones, aunado al impecable léxico y habilidad verbal de mi madre.”

This record reflects a very positive and happy stage where he sings about love, depicting situations and experiences of his own life. / Fue así como CALONCHO desde muy temprana edad, empezó a dedicarse a manufacturar canciones y moldearlas como plastilina hasta darle forma a “Fruta”, un disco en el que utilizó sonidos orgánicos y objetos no considerados instrumentos musicales, tales como agua, fruta, semillas y encendedores, entre otros. Un disco que representa una faceta muy positiva y alegre, donde le canta al amor a través de situaciones y experiencias vividas por él mismo.
While Rolling Stone magazine in Mexico reviewed “Fruta” as one of the best Latin albums of 2013, the radio station Ibero 90.9 praised is as one of the 9 best EPs of the year. The track “Palmar” positioned itself at #14 on the list of 10 best singles of the year, according to Warp magazine, and in the United States that same song made its debut on “Today’s Top Tune” at KCRW, a radio station that has a significant influence on new musical trends. / Mientras que en México la revista Rolling Stone reseña “Fruta” como uno de los mejores álbums Latinos del 2013, la estación Ibero 90.9 lo resalta como uno de los mejores 9 EPs del año. El tema “Palmar” se colocó en la posición #14 de los 10 mejores sencillos del año de acuerdo a la revista Warp y en Estados Unidos ese mismo tema hizo también su debut en “Today’s Top Tune” de la radio KCRW, estación de gran influencia en las nuevas tendencias de la música.
