The Center Piece For This Year’s Artwork Will be a Ceramic Sculptural Piece Made by the Soteno Family Workshop, Bringing Over 100 Years of Metepec’s Cultural Tradition
To This Year’s Event.
“Each year, we seek to celebrate a distinct expression from the rich heritage of Mexican Art and Culture as it relates to Día de Los Muertos. This year, we are inspired by ‘El Árbol de la Vida’, the sculptural traditions of Metepec and their evolution to include elements and themes taken from Día de Los Muertos. As our inspiration,  El Árbol de la Vida also represents the celebration of the Universal Tree of Life, a common central spiritual idea to many cultures and world religions, as we embrace the fact that we are all branches and leaves of one great Tree of Life and all members of one race – the human race – with all of its beauty and diversity.”
— Tyler Cassity- Hollywood Forever, Los Angeles
On October 29th 2016, the largest Day of the Dead celebration in the nation returns to the Hollywood Forever Cemetery for its 17th consecutive year. This year’s theme is “El Árbol De La Vida,” celebrating the sculptural traditions of Metepec that echo elements of Día De Los Muertos. The Tree of Life also has a wider symbolism, reflecting the idea that humanity is one single race– an outlook that is especially pertinent in these particularly trying times.
Weighing approximately 85lbs, the ceramic art piece includes traditional ornaments such as flowers and animals, as well as some of Hollywood Forever most memorable landmarks. It took over 6 weeks to design and finish.
The LA Day of The Dead at Hollywood Forever, has grown from a modest gathering of 300 people in 1999 to a massive event of more than 40,000 people visiting the grounds last year. The event exposes the multi-cultural, multi-lingual population of Los Angeles to a Mexican tradition in a way that is authentic and understandable.
This year’s edition features a new round of mind-blowing altars, delicious food, traditional dancing, and some very special musical guests that will keep you on your feet!!
The final line up will be announced at the end of August!
In keeping with the 2016 theme, this year will also include and amazing art exhibition in the Cathedral Mausoleum.
Stay tuned for more announcements!
