“One person’s Trash Is Another person’s Treasure” Materials that would ordinarily be dumped in a landfill have found a new life thanks to Rubbish To Runway (R2R) ReFashion Show.
Organized by the nonprofit Long Way Home and Runway to Rebuild with the mission to promote the use of sustainable design and materials to construct self-sufficient schools that promote education, employment and environmental stewardship in underdeveloped countries.
Held in Redondo Beach CA, Saturday May 21st, 2016, the night started out with delicious Hors d’oeuvres, drinks and networking. The beautiful and talented Master of Ceremonies, Roxy Amezquita (singer of Latin pop group 5senti2) took on the stage and gracefully engaged the audience as she welcomed the models and provided details of the designs. Followed by an intimate acoustic showcase by Chyl Music, DJ Sets by Gina Calderoni and more fashion.
The family-friendly evening presented both male and female models as young as 8 walking to popular rock, pop, rap and reggae tunes. More than 20 beautiful designs graced the runway representing handmade formalwear made by local artists. The designs included used, recycled, up-cycled, and reclaimed materials such as thrift shop bargains, cards, product packaging, plastic utensils, newspaper, plastic bags, duct tape, children’s books, music records, piping and recycled fairy wings.
The evening concluded with a silent auction with amazing items, such as tickets to The Magic Castle, original paintings and Disneyland Tickets, followed by a cocktail party.
Long Way Home uses sustainable design and materials to build schools in Guatemala. The Tecnico Chixot School in Comalapa now has 66 students taught by locally trained teachers and occupies a campus of buildings constructed with earth-packed tires and trash-filled bottles.
Rubbish to Runway Los Angeles raised close to $6,000 and a little over 150 people attended the event. A successful first run in Los Angeles thanks to everyone that united for this wonderful cause, the attendees, the models, the designers, the MUA + Hair team, the production team and a special thank you to the sponsors, ROC Entertainment, Farmers Insurance and Keller Williams Realty.
