Musical Magic in a power plant with Nancy Sanchez for Valentine’s

Musical Magic in a power plant with Nancy Sanchez for Valentine’s

The Edison is one of LA’s more upscale and quirky music venues.  Designed by DTLA urban renewal developer  Andrew Meieran and run by the entertainment entrepreneur Barbara Jacobs, it is situated inside LA’s first privately-owned power plant, underground in the sub-basement of the Higgins Building, constructed in 1910. It retains parts of the generators and other mechanical marvels of the time in a completely refurbished two and half story shimmering cavern lined with copper and brass, with crystal chandeliers, movie screens running silent films, side rooms flanked by windows into power tunnels running beneath city, and quiet coves with Champaign fountains. There is no The Edison sign;  its unremarkable entry is in an alley, marked only by a black clad (and very friendly) doorman in a chair. Once inside, guests descend the stairs into a glittering environment reminiscent of the Coconut Grove.  And those guests must stick to the dress code – no cutoffs, shorts,  t-shirts or track shoes. Men must be in dress shoes and collared shirts; women are always glamourous. In was in this romantic environment on Valentine’s night that I was fortunate enough to see Nancy Sanchez in her red satin-gowned bejeweled jazz persona, bringing back the glamour of the 40’s for swaying millennials in top hats, long gowns and patent leather shoes celebrating (or starting) their romances. I have known Sanchez for  almost two years, but always as a Latina pop and traditional musica singer and Mariachi band leader.  I came late to the party;  the focus of her career has always been exactly what she did on Valentine’s night — mesmerizing people with a lush, sexy voice, melodious period songs and a seductively gorgeous stage presence.  She was – and is — jazz through and through, the winner of  three Orange County Music Awards for Latin and Jazz. It was clear why jazz awards have piled up on her shelves.  Backed by a full band – guitar, keyboard, horns, drums, standup bass, she sang standards with polish and soul.  Serenading us with songs like  “Dream a Little Dream of Me”  and “Besome Mucho”, Sanchez kept the room swaying, finger snapping, and in some corners and on some couches, making out. Sanchez gave us a remarkable three 45-minutes sets, keeping her voice clear and smooth and her energy up from first to last song.  In the second set, Sanchez did what only she can do — morphed into a Latina pop singer while staying with the jazz club atmosphere.  Ascending the stage in her flaming red and gold leather Mariachi outfit (sans sombrero) she belted out songs from her new,  predominantly Spanish album America Novio (American boyfriend), recounting the  challenges of making the cultural shift of a little girl brought to Estado Unitos from her home in Toluca, Mexico, and immersing herself in jazz and its culture while also being immersed in the culture of Mexico at home. Her shift in style, costume, language and culture was smooth and effortless in the second set.  Many of those in the room were Spanish speakers (common in LA) and those who were not easily flowed with the rhythms and instinctively understood the lyrics. When she pulled out her guitar, shifted the style from jazz to rock, and launched into the title song, “American Novio”,  the room moved...

Vacation Ideas Inspired by This Year’s Oscar-Nominated Movies

For cinephiles, movies are absolute magic, giving us a chance to escape our day-to-day lives and head to the California coastline, the London cityscape, or the salt planet of Crait (shout-out to Star Wars fans). Thankfully, you can visit those places even after the end credits roll — well, most of them anyway. The movies currently in theaters for this year’s Oscar season have been giving us some major travel inspiration. Here are six Oscar-nominated movies that have inspired us to book our next getaway. “Call Me by Your Name”: Northern Italy The coming-of-age romance “Call Me by Your Name” can bring a tear to the biggest tough guy. And its sunny Italian backdrop can inspire wanderlust in the most adamant homebody. Set “somewhere in Northern Italy” according to the opening credits, it follows Elio and Oliver as they race up verdant hillsides, plunge into picturesque pools, and tumble down cobblestone lanes — only to break into dance in a crumbling plaza when The Psychedelic Furs is playing. But most of the movie is set in a sprawling, weathered villa surrounded by peach trees evoking the kind of sleepy, sticky summer that can only be experienced on “the continent.” Oyster Hotel Pick: For your own villa romance along the Lombardy coast, consider the Boutique Hotel Villa Sostaga. “Darkest Hour”: London These days, the phrase “Keep Calm and Carry On” has been thrown on posters, mugs, and even cell phone covers, but the slogan originally came from British government posters in 1939 to bolster citizens facing wartime threats. It’s that iron will and perseverance that comes across in the film “Darkest Hour,” which documents Winston Churchill’s days as prime minister. Plus, the set pieces for this epic film include some of the most venerable landmarks in London, such as Buckingham Palace, Downing Street, and the Palace of Westminster capped off by towering Big Ben, giving a timeless sense of stability still welcome today. Oyster Hotel Pick: With traditional grandeur — and spectacular afternoon teas — The Ritz London is hard to beat. “Lady Bird”: Sacramento, California In many ways, “Lady Bird” is the story of a headstrong teenager and the hometown she can’t leave behind. As an assertive high school student, Lady Bird finds Sacramento lacking in glamour and sophistication, and she pines for the East Coast. But by the end of the film, she’s wrestling with nostalgia over soft California sunshine, romantic road trips, and the cozy charm of a Craftsman home. And while mother-daughter tensions run high throughout the film, the duo bonds over their shared love of house-hunting for the perfect Cali bungalow. Oyster Hotel Pick: Amber House Bed and Breakfast is a fine candidate for a Craftsman dream house. “Coco”: Mexico City From “papel picado” paper flags to soulful mariachi tunes, the Pixar movie “Coco” is piled high with cultural touchstones all marking a path to Mexico City. And while much of the movie is set in the mythical land of the dead, here, too, the buildings, plazas, and cobblestone streets were sketched from real-world examples borrowed from this capital city. (Eagle-eyed moviegoers might even be able to spot some of the city’s specific cemeteries depicted.) If you plan your trip during Dia del los Muertos (Day of the Dead), you’ll see the city festooned with marigolds and candy-colored skulls, transforming into a “Coco”-esque landscape. Oyster Hotel Pick: The Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico served as the model for the spirit world’s...

Lightning in a Bottle 2018

Lighting In a Bottle 2018  festival returns this year to Bradley, California at the Lake San Antonio Recreation Area May 23-28. Back with an exciting line-up, workshops, art and more, LIB is recognized as one of California’s biggest, most well-renowned, and epic transformational gatherings produced by festival experts “The Do LaB” The event can trace its roots back to 2000 when a private birthday party gave rise to what we know today as Lightning in a Bottle, the first event was held in 2004 at the Gold Creek Ranch of the Angeles National Forest. After taking a year off, the festival resurfaced in Santa Barbara at the Live Oak Camp in 2006. It was in Santa Barbara where Lightning in a Bottle began to grow in popularity and size. The event would remain at the Live Oak Camp until 2008 when it became clear that the festival needed a bigger venue to accommodate the larger crowds. So, in 2010, after taking yet another year off,  Do LaB relocated the event to the larger Oak Canyon Ranch in Silverado. After two years in Orange County, the festival, once again, relocated to Lake Skinner in the Riverside County town of Winchester. After spending the better part of 13 years in Southern California, Do LaB was on the hunt for a more central location so that music fans in both Northern and Southern California could reach the festival. They found the perfect location in the San Antonio Reservoir Recreational Area in the Central California town of Bradley. While all of this moving was occurring, the popularity of the festival continued to grow. In fact, Lightning in a Bottle has grown to become one of the West Coast’s must-attend festivals. Check out this year’s lineup to get yourself pumped up for one heck of a music festival. Wake Up To Beauty Arrives On The Scene As A Niche Beauty Umbrella Company For Budding Brands

Wake Up To Beauty Arrives On The Scene As A Niche Beauty Umbrella Company For Budding Brands

After acquiring Level Naturals and Das Boom Industries a year ago, Wake Up To Beauty is positioning itself to be multibrand heavy hitter in the natural segment. Led by Celeste Bernabe and David Rosenblatt, former general manager for North America at Moroccanoil, the emerging beauty industry player aims to assemble a portfolio of three to five brands it can transform from underperforming gems to formidable powerhouses. Next year, Wake Up To Beauty is projecting its current lineup of two brands will generate $5 million to $10 million in sales. “We want to acquire and build niche brands that are disruptive and fill a need in the marketplace or make people think in a different way,” says Bernabe, previously a product development consultant and hairstylist. “We will look at the various categories in beauty – body care, skincare, makeup and haircare – for opportunities to fit under our umbrella.” Since it acquired Level Naturals and Das Boom Industries for undisclosed amounts, Wake Up To Beauty has been restructuring the brands and bringing them up to speed to handle customer growth. The Southern California company is moving into a 7,500-square-foot facility in Orange County, where it will produce goods in-house and scale manufacturing to meet demand. “I am interested in a clean, green lifestyle for myself and my family, and I identified with the transparency of Level Naturals. The manufacturing side is fairly new to me, but I love that we make everything, and it’s all done by hand in small batches,” says Bernabe. “That’s the core of the brand, and I really want to bring that story to light.” Launched in 2009, Level Naturals presently offers six products priced from $8 to $20: soap, bath bomb, shower bomb, body polish, soy candle, and room and body mist. Wake Up To Beauty is reintroducing the brand’s body polish in a clear bottle to allow customers to peek inside at its contents. On tap for Level Naturals is a clay mask that will premiere within six to eight weeks on the brand’s website. Going forward, Wake Up To Beauty plans to release a product about once a quarter. Bath bombs are Level Naturals’ biggest business driver. “Bath bombs are big right now, and we have natural bombs that may not turn your bath bright blue or bright pink, but have ingredients that are better for your body,” says Bernabe. “You still have the benefits of bath bombs, but you’re not sitting in synthetic fragrances.” Bernabe underscores Level Naturals has widespread appeal to women and men seeking natural products for themselves and their children. “It’s price point is geared to everyday consumers,” says Bernabe. “The brand was really designed for everybody to be able to make use of natural products.” Priced slightly higher than Level Naturals at $12 to $24, Das Boom Industries’ products include a wash, scrub, conditioner, shampoo, comb and lotion. The four-year-old brand is centered around destination-inspired scents. The scent offerings transport customers, who Bernabe describes as discerning male shoppers, to Denali, Kyoto, Detroit, Marrakesh, Bourbon County and the West Indies. The West Indies fragrance is the bestseller. Das Boom Industries and Level Naturals are focused on e-commerce at the moment, but Wake Up To Beauty has grander distribution aspirations for them. “When Level Naturals first started, it fit into natural grocers and natural stores online...

Winter Olympics 2018 When and How To Watch!

Hundreds of athletes from over 90 countries around the world will be competing at the upcoming Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. Around 242 athletes will form Team USA, three of which are Hispanic. The countries of Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Bolivia, Ecuador, Brazil and Spain will also have competing teams in various disciplines. Although Latin American countries have a long history in the Winter Olympics (Argentina began participating in 1928 and Chile followed in 1948), none of them have been able to win a medal. But yet, the Hispanic audience always tunes in to enjoy the beautiful exhibitions every four years. Due to the endless amount of events happening throughout the day, cable and television companies have focused all their efforts on creating a seamless visual experience that will not only allow viewers to have an HD experience, but also to navigate through the various games in a fast and customized way unique to each viewer. NBC acquired that rights to cover the Olympics through 2020 and is maximizing their acquisition by providing over 2,400 hours of live coverage and over 1,800 hours of streaming from February 9 to February 25. For a whole month, winter sports fanatics will be able to enjoy the 102 events of the 15 sports that will be taking place this year. Comcast, NBC’s parent company, recently also announced their latest technology available through their cable service Xfinity as the following: 50 Virtual Channels Xfinity customers will have access to the 50 Virtual Channels, curated by the Xfinity TV editorial team, that will highlight the best moments of each day in PyeongChang, trending athletes, spills and thrills and more. Customers can watch all videos included in a playlist or browse and select only the videos they would like to watch. Live Streaming For the first time ever, Xfinity customers will have access to hundreds of Winter Olympics features from their handheld devices. This includes cellphones and tablets with the Xfinity Stream app and on computers via the Xfinity website. On Demand Access Due to the time difference with South Korea it will be difficult to watch the games live. A curated programming selection of the Winter Olympics will be available in 4k HDR via On Demand, including the very popular opening ceremony and some of the most popular sports that include skiing, ice skating and snowboarding. X1 Sports App An on-screen companion experience with the X1 Sports App, providing viewers with the latest scores, schedules, stats, and highlights for every sport and event. Voice Commands For the PyeongChang Winter Games, X1 customers can: Say “Winter Olympics” to navigate to the NBC Olympics dashboard. Check the hockey score while watching curling by saying, “USA Men’s Hockey.” Explore events, replays, and highlights for any sport by saying, “Alpine Skiing.” Find out when athletes are competing by saying, “Gus Kenworthy” or “Team USA.” Check out how any country is doing by saying, “What is the medal count?” Plan out your day by saying, “What Olympics events are on today?” Say, “What song is this?” to get song and artist information for the music playing during figure skating...
